I finished a wonderful total of 13 books in Augvust. As I live in the south, it is too hot in August to do much but read. I finished some great books, but these two I had been wanting to read since they came out and it took me until August to read them.

Beach House Reads

Kristy Woodson Harvey is taking us back to the beach in Beach House Reads. Her beach house in this novel is the “Mommune”. Charlotte ends up needing a place to stay when her husband is jailed for a while collar crime he swears he didn’t commit. She and her daughter join two other families in a former Bed and Breakfast where they share the family duties.

The Mommune is a fun found family place and the small town gossip columnist keeps things interesting. The story is told from three perspectives, Charlotte, the Mommune owner, and Charlotte’s teenage daughter, Iris. It kept things interesting to switch perspectives, and see all sides of the story. Iris’ chapters were a little too teenage angsty for me, but I enjoyed the trip to the beach.

That Last Carolina Summer

Karen White’s latest stand alone was hard to wait for, but my mom read it first so I had to wait a little bit. It was worth it. This was pure Karen White gold, set in the Lowcountry and with characters that seem familiar even though they are fictional.

Phoebe returns home to the lowcountry when her mother’s dementia gets to be too much for her sister. Vowing it will only be for a short time, she tries to get everything under control while also avoiding the premonitions that have haunted her since she was struck by lightning as a child.

White’s writing takes us right to the shores and helps us smell the pluff mud, while we find out what the past has to do with the present.
