I chose The Heart is a Lonely Hunter for the book I was supposed to read in school and didn’t for the 2019 Brown Dog Reading Challenge. And I am so glad I did not read it in school.
I know it’s supposed to be a classic and a commentary on American Life, but I just could not get on board. There was no real, cohesive story. It just rambled through the lives of unlikable people that I think we were supposed to feel sorry for.
It did touch on racism and poverty in the south, but not in any emotional way. The writing was good, it just wasn’t worth reading.
